Don't worry about that. You already know that you should not rush things. The tree won't run away. Take your time, think about it, and then read again. I'm sure you'll get it. You have a couple of great teachers here assisting you

I have just realised something. If I turn the tree around as I have done in the pic so the trunk that is the off-shoot trunk (sorry if that is the wrong word) is on the right and not the left, if I cut that down to the base, and cut what appears to be the main trunk at a point where there is a branch I get that identical left-to-right curvature seen in the second of the "1" pic's on the top row of the diagram.
Also, can anyone tell me how thick and how tall the trunk would need to be to fit the dimensions of the pot I said I had? The one 18.5 cm (L) x 14 cm (W) x approx 5 cm (D). I am guessing that a trunk 8 cm or even 10 cm thick would fit nicely with room.

Regarding the pot / tree combo
It is not really just a matter of what size trunk will fit into your pot. There are alot more factors to consider if you really want
to bring out the Best of the Tree in it.
Things like thickness of trunk, height/ width of tree are a couple. Then you need to consider if it's a Mascaline tree(tough looking, strong base)
or more feminine tree (more graceful with softer lines), and also feature colour of the tree like flowers or bark colour.
So in your pot with dimensions you supplied any number of trees could go into it .

I think I do see now. The purple line is the trunk that is merely there to thicken the tree, the red is the trunk and the green is the branches.
This of course will come a few years down the line when I come to start work on it. Now is just thinning the roots of vertical hanging roots. The soil in the ground seems to be a good quality. Lots seem to grow healthy with little prep to the soil.

This ^^
The left pic is pretty much as it was when I planted it on with the vermiculite and potting compost. Which compared to how it was when I took it out of the pot when I first found it was pot bound is a massive improvement. I don't know where I would have been without my root shears. They did a great job.

I Know you don't know ok, but , those roots are terrible . Sorry I have to say it now .
This picture shows how roots need to spread out from the trunk and not be a tangled mess.

The roots in your picture are no better off now than before , actually they are Worse now.
If you want this tree to be of ANY use further down the track then I personally would remove it from the ground asap and spread those roots out wards. It would have been better getting the tree ready for the ground planting as I advised earlier on.
If you just leave it like this Now it will develop roots which are Tangled ,twist around each other and twist around the trunk. The roots will need a major cut back later on and that's putting it nicely.
By all means ask for advice and then completely ignore it, that's totally cool.

Personally, I would not do that. The roots have been under stress enough already, doing more to it now will probably do no good.
