Weeping willow project was created by Claudiu

Hello there. I've collected some branches and started a weeping willow project.
Placed them in water with rooting hormone and wait them to root.
I've got 3 of them and can't wait to see how it will go.

Hi there.
Last year I made willow cuttings to root just by sticking them in the ground.
There were not meant for bonsai, but for the branches to be cut in few years and to be made into brooms.

When is the best time of the year to start a project like this for cold northern climates?

On my knowledge willows loose their leaves pretty late and leaf out pretty soon in springtime. I don't know much sure but those who made it said that they made the cuttings in summer .... so I think the best is about a month or two before they start loosing their leaves. To give you time to root in water and pot them before winter comes. They root strong very quick .... in about 2 weeks without root hormone.

Best chances are always in spring during / right after leafs form. THat will give it a full season to grow. I took these cuttings in May. They are not stable enough in their pots to stay upright on their own, and have half a metre branches on them.

Yes, after 2-3 weeks the roots started to appear. As I had the first white points I planted them in substrate, with the pot fully submerged in water. Then I did not refill the water untill it was almost gone. The pot now sits in a few cm of water, refilled whenever it dries out.
