what! only 15years? i didn't knew they grow this hard. and i can believe u don't want to give it back to ur new sensei. ^^ it has a very nice nebari with lots of big roots. in 10 years who knows, it could go to a big competition and win. (probably not noelanders)
what have u in mind for the pot? i think a shallow oval grey pot woul look good. this one looks to deep to me.

ha ha he is not my sensei i havent found one of those yet...
as for the pot it is now in a mica trainer , but yes i am leaning toward oval and 2 inches deep not sure of the color tho.
i really did not like red pots in the begining, but they complement ficus really well.anyway it will have to be a special one. i found one online last year but it took a month to save the money and it was gone by then...when it is ready it will find me

howdy all ,
well its that time of year again. I did things a little different this year when she overwintered in the house. I cut watering back a lot,at times twice a month. i also did not fertalize. this grinded growth to a halt and all leaf internodes were shrank considerably. lighting was kept the same (16hrs on 8hrs off) and it was turned in the window every 2 weeks. the wires were kept on from last fall nothing was cutting so some minor tweeking was done. after 2 rounds of fert. and a month of outside full sunlight the growth was out of control...time to do some work
here is the before
and the after...I shortened the lower branch and pinched all terminal buds
this pic isn't the greatest :pinch: ill take another tomorrow

Jerry Maeslic and some other friends here defoliate 3-4 times a year, but and MOT mentioned tree needs to be healthy, and you need to have tropical conditions for that, which means that the tree is growing the whole year.Defoliation sets the tree back=stress.kittyvlekkie wrote:

i have a ficus gingseng and should you prune it as heavily as you did?
ive seen your post about your ficus and yes you can. i noticed you have a nice trunk going but very long branches.techincally you can cut the branches down to the trunk if you wanted to,that is if it is actively growing.defoliating creates more and smaller leaves. smaller leaves lead to smaller buds which make smaller branches with even smaller leaves...
the branches can be put in soil and kept wet for a month and they will grow roots. rooting hormone helps alot but is not needed.roots will just take longer to form
would now be a good time for such a thing?
and also, remove ALL the leaves?

double posted
In tropical countries people defoliate 3-4 times during the growing season, in continental climate JM advises every two years , 3 weeks before show, if that happens to be during the growing season.
MOT I love your fig and thank You for posting...
I need to post how I massacred my ginseng fig.

M.O.T. By far one of the nicest ficus'I have seen from non-tropical regions. I love how you get this tree to grow! Mine is also finally picking up speed; When I have some decent trimming done, will come shop for winter tips
