I have no idea. I do know I see small ficus plants, say 40 metres across, in the tropics in full sun. My ficus all go out after the last real frosts, normally in April and stay in full sun. It is the only way I get 50cm to a metre growth in a year.

Hi leatherback , I just want to ask what is the minimum night temperature you allow your ficuses to be out at ? Because I want to move them outside but I don't know when . Most sites say never below 15 c but it seems very warm for me .

I kept them out untill night time dropped below 0 by accident in fall. They refused to grow for months. Normally I put them out when temps do not drop below 5 anymore. Late april, may (But I have a greenhouse, and some of them are in the unheated greenhouse now already).

Sorry I took so long. I moved and had to catch up on school. It is unfortunately too late. It already was when I posted this. Basically what happened was I went to a bonsai and tea garden here in central florida and picked a prebonsai and a pot. The pot and tray were like 10 dollars and the tree was 12. The lady there said she would pot it for me, so that I wouldn't kill it with improper potting soil, for 10 dollars. She got that far with doing things correctly. She removed the tree from the pot and didn't break up the roots at all or remove the regular potting soil. She basically plopped it in the pot and put, although good, mostly organic bonsai soil around it. I would assume root rot set in within a month judging by how fast it died. It really sucks that that was my first experience with bonsai. I wish I could go back but I suppose I would have never gotten into the hobby had it not been for stumbling across that little store.

Dont get sad. It is usually what the first bonsai experience is. I am sure many of us ended with dead one the first time. Now move on and get your next one and use all you know so far and keep up. Good luck.

I will! I currently have a probably 3-5 year old Bougainvillea that I salvaged from near death today so hopefully that survives (Any tips are greatly appreciated) and I have some Crepe Myrtle cuttings that will be ready to pot in bonsai soil for the first time in a month or two. I hope to air layer or buy (Or both, why not try it all?) a juniper soon. Those have been my favorite tree/ shrub since before I really knew what bonsai was.

Sorry to hear abou this.

However, I would like to make a point here. Too often on this forum I hear people claim that organic soild causes root rot. This is absolutely not true. Millions of trees are grown every year using plan organic potting soil. It is improper watering that causes roots to die, and subsequent rot. Rotting is an endresult of improper care. Especially the young saplings that we see most on this forum do not per se need anything else than potting soil.

The plant may have died due to the repot. But it may also have drowned by your eagerness to not let the plant dry out..
