It is not a matter of opinion whether a tree is suitable or not. Some trees are suitable, some are not, some are suitable for large size bonsai, some for small size.
However, it is certainly not a matter of opinion whether something is a bonsai or not. You cannot simply put a plant in a pot and call it bonsai.

This does not look like a bonsai to me.
We are not discussing whether this can become a bonsai.

RUTH - I really like your crazy plant even if it is not a bonsai.
I wouldn?t do anything with it and keep it as it is as a very nice house plant :)

Auk, if he is on a bonsai site it goes to reason he would someday like his umbrella tree to be a bonsai. I never said his tree was a bonsai only that I have seen umbrella trees in bonsai shows. If he wants to work toward a bonsai he has to keep it alive first. Can't we be gracious and help him with his yellowing leaves issue.
In very general terms, I have found in the bonsai world people get very intense on what is, what is not, what could be, what could not be - bonsai.
I've watched so many Walter Pall videos and I love his perspective. He did things in the bonsai world that people said were improper , wouldn't work, criticized him, said he was not following tradition. He did his own thing and didn't get hung up on all the guidelines that seem to be pushed as rules sometimes. Years ago the huge sumo trunks were in, now not so much. 名媛直播 is art. Why not an umbrella or a jade beautifully grown into bonsai form.
I so respect all the folks on this forum with decades of experience. I read every post and listen to the advice. I don't want to see someone discouraged in growing what may just be a "houseplant" hopefully on the way to bonsai. In the site bonsai4me.com there is a section on umbrellas trees.
I love kristof's work because he has fun with bonsai. Imagination and an inspiration fuel his work. He has fun!

There is a big difference between Kristof being very creative, Walter Pall being a game changer, and someone buying a plant and thinking he is 'doing bonsai'.
We were not discussing if Schefflera is suitable. The plant in question is not a bonsai.

Most of my trees is just small trees under training to become a bonsai. My umbrella tree use to be in the garden untill March this year. I've put it in a big enough bonsai training pot and started to cut it to become a bonsai. Because it use to be cut back to stay small, the foliage reduced dramatically in size over the years

I do hope you do see the difference between you, buying bonsai material, doing research, trying to learn and someone buying a plant?

Yes dear Auk, I do. I have no doubt that some of what I have in pots now will never be classified as bonsai because the material isn't great, but I am learning about trees, fertilizer, substrate, etc. I also have no doubt that when I feel experienced enough to buy a bonafide bonsai I will be confident in doing so because I practiced on what I have now. If I'm going to learn and surely mess up, I'd rather it be on a smaller priced items from the local garden shop than on a bonsai that someone put heart and soul into and also something I invested hundreds of dollars into.
I do not expect to buy a Venus fly trap and make it into a bonsai, rest assured. :woohoo:

Ep1977 when this happens to mine I get real careful with the watering. I also remove any leaves that are crowding a branch. It seems to work. Mine is way overgrown. I'm going to do an air laying and cut some of the long crazy branches off.

Thank you for the advice. And to Auk I've never been to a 名媛直播 show where a few umbrella trees weren't displayed.

Hm.. but the plant show is not a bonsai, and is just a houseplant!?
