I think I have to totally agree with Auk on this one. He makes an irrefutable point.

I heart plants is getting into bonsai all the way though. He shows a lot of interest and he is putting heck of an effort and time on it. He just needs to do a little more research on his own. I hope he sticks around, he'll have some trees to share in a few years!

Thanks :) and haha yes it does seem that way, but luckily the internet is full of info and I've got enough stock (wild) in my area to play around with (have setup almost 20 cuttings in past day, have also transplanted several field-grown hibiscus into nursery containers for them to grow-out!)

I'm now using a mixture of like 2/3 diatomaceous earth granules and 1/3 potting soil (these are all in larger, non-bonsai containers, including the original store-bought hibiscus I started the thread with that ones was re-potted as well), it's sold by an auto parts store as an absorbent - is this seen as good here? I read about fired clays as cat litter and other ideas for inorganic media on bonsai4me, which is where I got the idea for this specific product - unfortunately, I didn't read that it should be rinsed, and while the stuff is most certainly not dusty I wish I had rinsed it first - if it's properties are as close/better than adakema(sp?) then I can really go crazy with this stuff when it's $9 for 6 gallons' worth!!

eangola wrote: Misting the top does nothing. The plant "drink" waters from the roots, which are at the bottom, so if you keep the top of the soil moist, but the bottom dries, your plant will die.

I had been informed otherwise, I've heard that misting helps reduce transpiration through the bottom of the leafs, but it sounds like you think I'm using misting as a form of watering ('top of the soil moist, but the bottom dries,'), which isn't the case. In that container, there was no drainage - there could be no dry bottom with a wet top, unless I'd let the entire thing dry out (killing the tree, of course!) Either way though I'm lucky enough to be able to just go online and ask q's and get help, and have since moved it to a better setup :D

eangola wrote: About your soil, I already explained.

I think you are also quite confused about the benefits, and necessity of re-poting.

I want to grow this thing some more, it's not 'field growing' but it's not a bonsai container like before, the new container is easily twice the volume of the old tray, I pierced a ton of holes in the bottom and, during transplant, I let as much soil fall away as I felt was ok for the root-ball, and it went into the new container with a much more proper mixture (maybe 2/3 diatomaceous earth, 1/3 soil)

its your plant, if you want fat smooth rocks, I see no issue

Thanks I just re-sized a picture of the ficus I chopped (it's a benjamina (sp?), it's at 7 days now and no buds, have been told it's unlikely to survive), will see if it attaches for me!

That leaves no room for doubt. I don't see the point trying to convince you.

I was saying that specifically in regards to the fact that I've been maintaining proper moisture levels - there's nothing to 'convince', it feels like you just cherry-picked that line so you could make that obtuse response to it, painting me as a stubborn neophyte who's not interested in learning, doing and *changing when I err*. That's wrong, in fact now that I can successfully post pics why don't I post my re-potting, hopefully I got it right although am already aware of one error (didn't rinse my diatomaceous earth - actually, I haven't even heard of it from this site, so hopefully it's not poorly-regarded here, as the first site I was researching on was very convincing in it being an equal, if not superior, product than akadama)

(also, two new pre-bonsai hibiscus that I got while landscaping! And why not show my cuttings, am sure you guys make tons so surely seeing my setup will yield critiques :D )

leatherback wrote: Being spoon-fed information does not teach you how to learn. it is exactly the same as you not wanting someone else doing things for you. In this case.. Finding information.

It's not the same thing, a more apt comparison that I made earlier would be the difference between hiring someone to come tend my plants or doing it myself - I'd consider having a professional come do them *while teaching me* and helping me understand, a very different thing - the difference is in the result, one leaves me capable of it myself and the other does not. That's why I wanted more than "do this", I wanted the 'why' (and then it got muddled because of attitudes, mine included)

I mean, to take the sentiment of your quote to its logical conclusion, I wouldn't even use the internet I'd just work with my plants, nothing but them and myself, and trial&error - I'm going the path of learning everything I can online, both from reading and asking questions on forums :)

leatherback wrote: As for your rant, Parker.. :( Maybe tone it down a little yourself too? If you do not like what someone writes, just don't read their posts. It is free for a person to add as much or little info on their posts as they feel like. You have someting to add, add. But don't start complaining that you do not like someones answering style.

Please tell me that you see the irony in this, you complaining that he's complaining and implying that *he* shouldn't have written his, while by the presence of your post it's fine for you to write yours ;P
I will say that this seems to be a great board, people aren't push-overs but they also aren't nut-jobs when there's disagreement - I really like this place!!

Thanks and I am! I've had trees in the past, I've spent tons of time wiring branches and everything but it was years ago, I mistakenly thought that having since acquired great 'green thumb' skills that I'd have a leg-up here (hardly seems the case!), but either way this is totally my new hobby now and 'some trees' is a massive understatement, I don't know what I'll do with everything I end up collecting lol! There are just so many amazing specimen everywhere around me, I am on the lookout subconsciously now lol!! (Just want to note that I've never and would never take a field grown that wasn't ok to take!)

You do see where this comparison is flawed, I hope?
