Nice do it yourself post. I have a copule trees planted in handmade boxes (not made by me though). If I had enough space in my apartment I?d love to give it a go... The tools and the will certainly I have them.

We don't have anything like that here in the "fly over states" not that ever seen any way.

Posted 8 years 10 months ago #19740i'm surpriced that the original height of the tree was kept..
same for the lenght of the branches.
i'm afraid that you will lose a growthyear afterwards..
personally, if this was my tree, i would have chopped the top to where the split was where the new top went to the right.. and would have kept that small branch going to the left there..
also would have cut off the large branche going to the left, leaving just the small branch there..
the tree is lacking branches in a serious way, so you can only hope that new growth will appear lower on the trunk.
otherwise i suggest letting a few branches grow free this year and use them for threadgrafting next winter..
also surprised they didn't help you repot the tree.. always good if you buy a tree this time of year, to see what's underneat the dirt.. (are the roots healthy? etc)

Posted 8 years 10 months ago #19743The smaller branch on the left of items since been wired up and across, the big branch on the left is just there to thicken the trunk out and help with sap flow, the tiny branch below that is the current lowest keeper and I'm/we discussed and graft from the big branch on the left, bend some of the future growth round and get a lower first branch on the right...
It's kinda hard to see what was done in the pic I guess, I will get some better pics shortly.
I think we have done pretty much as you said?
And are doing what you said with the left big branch?-)
Thanks for the help btw!-)
Edit; they seemed Un interested in checking the roots after I told them what I had done and where it came from, not sure why but I didn't ask them to be fair.
What do you mean lose a growth year?

Posted 8 years 10 months ago #19746that last picture looks like a good side for a new front imo..
anyways, always hard to judge on a picture, you're in a better position to know what you can do..
with losing a growth year, i mean:
if you can do certain things now, but you don't do them and wait till next year (like cutting back or pruning branches) you will have lost:
- this year's growth
- next year's growth (because you took the tree back a step)
so in that perspective, in 3 years time, your tree will one have made a 1 year's worth of progress..
if that makes sense..
in any case, maybe best not to overdo things and see if the tree is healthy and keep it alive..
