Preparing a Japanese maple sapling for bonsai? was created by Justin83

Hi everyone, I'm in need of a little guidance, I have a maple sapling thats about 15 inch tall with basically four budding twigs about 3-4 mm wide.
How would I go about preparing it for bonsai in the future?
Should I let it grow as it wants for a few years or try to keep it small by pruning each winter?
I've repotted it into bonsai soil was this a mistake?
It's currently outside in the UK in a plastic greenhouse/growbox to protect it from the elements...

find garden
plant tree in garden
let grow untill you have a better base to work from..
if you try to grow it in a small container, be prepared for 40 years of work before it will look like and older tree..

OK, maple 1 will be planted tomorrow, I have a second maple too work with, I plan on taking this plant as is to my local club for advice.
In your opinion what's next for this material... There seems to be a basic path for a trunk that I like but no doubt that's debatable!-)

I think we need a better photo. Preferably one that's not sideways.

Scroll left and right on the above link.
It's in a 5 litre pot, I'm guessing big enough to pot into a bonsai pot but too late in the year as it's budding?
Also it was from a nursery and was in a greenhouse, I'm guessing it's OK for it to be outside? It's below freezing here at night at the moment and icy, should I put it in my Un heated porch until the frost has passed or will it be OK?
