While I rarely disagree with leatherback, and usually find out I was wrong, I will say the one who has the trees that have lived the longest.

Collecting good looking trees is a matter of selecting the right trees, not at all a matter of when you collect. Obviously collecting in mid summer might kill the tree and never give you a good looking tree.
So why do you bring it up?
Sorry, I dont understand the question.

And I add another perspective. Why dont just listen to those that has collected the most saplings? Designing good looking trees or keeping trees healthy over time can be done without collecting any sapling ever.

Why do you post that you do not fully agree one gets better trees if you collect in fall, if nobody has said anything about the quality of trees in regards to collection moment.

Posted 3 years 2 months ago #73355One poster said spring.
Another poster said authum is good as well.
Op wonders who to listen to.
Second poster says: listen to the one that have the best trees.
But in reality, collecting in spring or in authum will not make any difference at all for the quality of the tree. Hence it makes no sence whatsoever to listen to the person with the best trees. Better listen to the person that have collected most saplings.

Reading is such a great skill to have.
Nobody talking about the best trees. It is about following the people whose trees you like best.
If you do not realize that the skills required to collect spalings do no differ from those of growing from seed, cutting and /or developing a rootball for bonsai one can wonder whether you understand growing bonsai. But well. I will leave that for brighter minds to decide.
I am out of this thread. Have fun arguing. Fact is. evergreens are collected both in spring and fall. And if you do not know whose advise to follow, check the trees being produced and decide which directions you prefer and follow that person. Its as simple as that.

I just said I would wait, didn't tell him not to dig... So LB said it can be done with a bit of aftercare. Period.
Shouldn't be any indecision there.
I just felt sad because I know LB's trees are far ahead of mine, and there's no way to people to preffer my trees, so I don't see why to put that way.
Even because I didn't see how can our comments be that opposite.
I just shared my own experience and inexperience (as I was clear that I didn't try at fall)...
I'll try to avoid that, I just don't want to be on bad terms with anyone.

I dont see any conflicting statements here. The person that have the trees I like best is the same person that have the best trees in my opinion. Who else is there to judge who has the best trees?
What I ment is that collecting saplings and styling good looking mature trees is two totally different skills. You can sucessfully collect thousands of saplings successfully without ever creating a good looking tree. You can also create thousands of good looking trees without ever collecting a sapling. Its even possible to buy mature good looking trees without having any knowledge or skills at all.

Posted 3 years 2 months ago #73598I did collect one little pine sapling and mixed my own soil for the first time! I did a mixture of gravel, wood chips, leaf litter, and organic soil. I also potted this pine in the mixture. I will put a picture of a little spruce I think i will dig up, do you guys think this will be a good tree?
