Most of us water the same way all year no matter temperature or wheather. Once the tree is slightly damp but not dry. Water a lot over the whole substrate surface untill it pours out the drainage holes. Pours, not drips. That way the tree gets a good balance between air and water over a watering cycle. How long the cycle is, is depending on a lot of factors. Rain, sun heat wind etc. Just make sure to check your tree every day and in peak summer maybe two times.
Since your tree is not adopted to full sun yet, it might be a good idea to transfer slowly to full sun. If done too fast the leaves might get sunburn. Not a big issue but unsightly.

If it is a Chinese Elm, it will be fine in the rain and in the sun.
They like it.

Whats your advice on fertilising the plant. iv just placed the plant outside today first day of being outside. is it good to fertilise it with liquid fertiliser. i heard it can do more damage as my plant is damaged and unhealthy and needs time to get better outside before fertilising.

That depends on type of fertilizer, streangth and substrate. Learn about your tree in your conditions the upcomming season and you be fine.

Too little fertilizer is better than too much.

Dom,
If I read correctly, it sounds like you may be watering too frequently. Yellowing/loss of leaves is a natural part of a deciduous tree's cycle, like Chinese Elm, but yellowing leaves are also a common indication of too much water. If its cool out, water once a week at the most, and if its sunny and warm it may require a little more. This applies to rain as well. Mine do well drying out a bit between waterings. I hope that helps.
