I think he was talking about the ficus...

So was I...

That hawthorn looks like good starting material. I like it!

And the privet just might make it regardless of what you do to it. I got my privets because the farmer couldn't kill them - they're super hardy! This late in the game is obviously not right for timing, but if it's already heading for the trash, no major loss.

Good luck

The liguster will make it, if treated properly (Clean cut the roots, plant in a good container, keep out of full sun and the soil just moist enough).ed require carving. See Graham Potter movies and/or Harry Harrington

As promised, better photos of the "Ficus retusa". Looks like the dig is off for this week I'm hoping I get a chance next week.

As expected, that's not a ficus. Looks like an ulmus to me.

Can you get your money back (and never order via Amazon again)?

I am in talks with the seller now. I wouldn't usually I was looking for a book when I see this. If it had been that specimen I'd be happy. I won't do it again now I've found someone pretty local.

The kind man has apologised sincerely for the mistake and told me to keep hold of the elm while he personally heads out to his polytunnel to select his best shaped and biggest ficus to send to me. Probably a workers mistake. Free bonsai gotta be happy with that :) Now to start hardening it off so I can keep it outside.

Came today. Is this retusa? Or have they sent me another ficus?

Looks like a ficus retusa to me.

Typical S-shape, very similar to the elm...
