Hi All,

This is my first post and also my first 名媛直播!

I bought this little beauty at an auction in Lake Merritt 名媛直播 Gardens in Oakland, California yesterday.

I am not sure how old the tree is but judging by the trunk I am guessing 30-50years.. Am I even close?

I want to start pruning soon to promote summer growth so I can start training.

Any tips on pruning the Japanese Kingsville Boxwood is much appreciated.

I have read up information from several places about pruning & care etc but happy to hear any experiences anyone has had before with this species.

I will continue to post pics as I progress.

All the best
Damien

That looks like a decent tree.
That stone in the pot... I don't like it at all. It draws away the attention from the tree itself.
The age... your guess is as good as mine. What did the nursery where it came from tell you?

I will continue to post pics as I progress.

I look forward to it. Can you put something near the tree for perspective, so we can better estimate its actual size?

Hi Auk,

Thanks for your comments.

I think the stone is too big also but its not something I will touch until repotting next year. (its probably wired in as it doesn't move at all)

I had been thinking I would like to style the tree like this:

but the stone does cause issues with exposing the trunk.

If I did remove the stone I would have to rotate the tree also so the exposed trunk is facing out.

Here is a to scale pic with my favourite IPA ;)

Thanks. The tree appears to be smaller than I thought :)

The design you showed does prove how much better the tree will look in a smaller pot, without the stone.
I don't really see a big problem removing it. A smaller stone to fill up the gap might work.

Good looking tree you have. I'd thin it out, and let the birds fly through it. ;) My experiences with Kingsville show they back bud very easily, so don't be afraid of pruning. If the growth becomes long & leggy, you can prune it to the last few leaves, and expect fresh buds all along the branch within a month or so. They fill out quickly. Keep an eye out for branch clusters. Too many branches in one place cause reverse taper (kingsvilles can look a little knobby because of it - part of the charm, too).

Go easy on extreme bending of branches. Larger ones can snap. Take your time. Take your time.

I've found they prefer some shade. I once experimented with kingsvilles in three different locations during the same year. One in mostly shade, one in partial shade, one in full sun. Full sun didn't thrive like the other two, so I adjusted, and it improved i.e., lesson learned.

Lastly, keep it outside. They're very hardy. They were one of my first trees, & I haven't killed one yet! BUT! It's an outdoor plant, don't keep it inside for more than a few days. They can take the cold.

I'm in agreement about the rock - it's big, and may be hiding some fault in the roots. A smaller one or none, and a smaller pot would definitely be better.
Keep us tabbed.

Well, hope you only took this very nice little tree inside while taking the pictures. If not, and as brkirkland22 previously pointed out, please take it outside. That is, of course, assuming that this tree is already acclimatized to this time of the year low temps. Also, if not, you can perform this process gradually by taking it first into some place with a protective shed or some unheated greenhouse, if possible.

Thanks for all the advice and great tips really appreciate it! :)

I have to keep the plant inside until I move in 3 weeks but I have it at my balcony window during the day.

Will it be ok for 3 weeks do you think? I open the balcony and let air in also and it gets direct sun for parts of the day

Anyway I went ahead and gave the tree a prune and thinned it out quite a bit.

Its my first time doing this to a tree so please any comments good or bad are welcome, I'm keen to learn! ;)

I left some areas I want to grow vertically so they fill higher areas so this isn't the intended final shape obviously

Here are some before and after shots

Should I repot it this year?

Will wait to mid summer if I do but I don't know when it was last repotted.

If I repot I will look at removing the rock (it is larger under the surface of the soil and wired in) not sure how connected it is to the tree tho.

If I do remove the stone I would probably rotate the tree to its open side is facing out.

Another alternative would be to add another tree in its place.

Something like this maybe another 4inch kingvilles

Would having two trees take away from the first tree? im not totally sold on the idea myself.

Here is a video which shows the tree better. The images didn't do it justice...
