It looks healthy. It will survive another year in that pot.
Maybe you should consider doing nothing and just leave it like it is now.
Many trees are ruined because people want to do too much in too short a time.

Nowadays, when I get a new tree, I usually leave it alone for a year. Do note the tree will have to adapt to its new environment too (and the care of its new owner).

If I do remove the stone I would probably rotate the tree to its open side is facing out.

I'm not sure what you think is wrong with that open side. I actually like it, it gives a good view on the trunk and branch structure.

Another alternative would be to add another tree in its place. Something like this maybe another 4inch kingvilles

That is an impressive... amount of money. I wouldn't do it. When the open side gets more light, it may bud back and grow new branches there. Maybe that way you can achieve what you are looking for.

I like the video, it does give a better idea of what the tree really looks like.

I tend to agree

What I mean is the open side is diagonaly facing the rock and not facing forward. So I would rotate it so that side is facing out rather than sideways

Any comments on the pruning I gave it?

Too much/Too Little?

Should I have left bigger clumps rather than so many smaller ones?
