Hehe, funny to see these experiences. I had one die after succesfull collection. Plant dug up in spring from a hergerow. Grew well for two years. Dug it up, trimmed the old roots back. To the new sideroots. And thats where the tree ended.
As that was one of my first more mature collected trees, i assumed i had really messed up. Now however i see a trend.

Yeah seems like you also need a lot of luck to establish them. I don't have too much space to place the trees so I guess I won't go for hawthorns again anytime soon
