As you can see the title, my late collected hawthorn woke up after 5 months.

I collected this tree in the beginning of april, it was a bit late, the first leaves had already been set at that time. I could not reach the tree earlier as floods had been in my way and they only cleared up in april.

The second problem I faced when I started to dig, that it had extremely long tap roots as it had been growing in full clay. I collected it with a very low amount of fine roots.

I put it in half zeolite, half fired diatomaceous earth. Of course the collecting of the tree gave it a big shock dropped its leaves very soon and only in early september, it came back.

In the meantime I put it in a well shaded area with a little bit of early sun, and gave it Canna Rhizotonic every two weeks.

From now on, this is going to be its progression topic.

Sorry to bring it to you but it probably won?t.... hawthorns can use last bits of energy and survive somehow for even 2 years on just a few leaves.. Then they die.
But nice attempt.

It happened to me with a big ligustrum last year. It kept coming back over and over again from spring until autumn then it died. Hope it will not happen again.

Collected tree - a bit late - no signs of life till autumn - new buds are opening to near zero temperatures at night (at least around here in Ko?ice and you?re not that far away) - what are the odds it will survive winter?
Especially since it is a hawthorn and general experience (in Slovakia and Czech republic) is that even if the grow new branches after collection, first 2 years are critical and after that they die. You should have a reasonable amount of roots for it to survive after collection. Even the sweating technique didn?t help me to save 2 very nice hawthorns - first died after it pushed out leaves in the begining of it?s second season after collection, the other later in the midsts of summer. Fingers crossed for you mate but I bet it has no chance.

On the other hand - my very first hawthorn yamadori with no roots at all after collection rooted in a black bag submitted to sweating - but this is very rare case that nobody around understand :D Maybe beginners luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Did you let them outside during the winter?

There is a club member in Hungary who collected a hawthorn and only came back in autumn. Then the new shoots died back. It came back after one year and immediately went back to dormancy for two years. Then it came back and thriving for 4 years now.

All I can do is hope for the best. And give it proper care of course.
