As far as bonsai goes, this is the only sensible course of action. And even this may take a decade before it resembles a tree, unless you are in the (sub) tropics, I suppose.

An alternative route is to develop lots of aerial roots and cover the trunk (Which are actually roots) with them. Again.. A decade before you have anything, probably even in the right climate!
If you are serious about bonsai, than these plants are just not suitable. Treat them as a nice houseplant. Don't spend time on them to create bonsai, is what I would say.

I didn't think about the aerial roots idea sounds cool but I have two ficus and none of them have developed any , I really don't want to keep it as a house plant because now that I know a thing or two about bonsai it appears very ugly to me and almost makes me angry so I will just have patience and experiment with it ;)
