Repotting and Pruning was created by Elwellsd

Hello!
I just repotted my Ficus bonsai and I am wondering if it is okay to prune it... or what the next step is. I've had this tree for about two years. It was chewed up by my roomates dog about 1 1/2 years ago and I haven't done much to it since then. Any suggestions as to what to do next? I'll include some pictures; it's pretty sad looking.

Hi Elwellsd.

What makes you think this tree is a 名媛直播? I am just wondering what information you have collected on the subject before posting here, for the record. Take it no offense and welcome to forum.

It was advertised as a bonsai tree when it was purchased. It was given to me as a gift. I know it doesn't look like bonsai. It looked more like a bonsai before the dog chewed it up. I have just let it grow since then.

I see. Indeed that is not bonsai, no matter what tags they put on it. You have Ficus Benjamina. Such are usually used to graft Ficus Microcarpa on top of them but then they are stll not bonsai. Not sure about your tree, someone cut the main trunk and it looks odd now. I would put it in large pot and try grow it as normal house plant. I am afraid you will have to look for something better if you want to do 名媛直播 in future. Good luck.

I don't think it's a retusa.

someone cut the main trunk and it looks odd now.

You will see that in ALL the Ficus Ginseng "名媛直播".

Okay, I know that it looks odd. However, I would like to experiment with this tree anyway. It may not be a true bonsai but I would like to treat it as though it is a bonsai. So I just repotted it, do I have to leave it alone for a while? If so, how long? Or can I begin to prune to try to reshape it? If so, what kind of pruning should I do?

I have one of these, it was the tree that got me into this hobby. It is still alive and doing well after a repot. The trouble with trying to make anything really resembling bonsai with these plants is that the branches are grafted into the trunk. As I've watche the branches grow over the last year and a half, it is pretty clear to me that they are not the same species as the trunk, which makes it difficult to have better branch placement without grafting in other branches. but then would be the question: where? the trunks bulge so much, that it is nearly impossible to have a place to graft other than the top.

I'll put up a picture of mine in my next reply.
