Figured $10 wasn't too much. Just out of curiosity, why does this not qualify and do you have any examples of something that does that would be considered starter?

Oh.. good. That's not a ridiculous price.
I think it's not great material as the trunk is too thin, lacks tapering, it doesn't have many low branches, the low branches have foliage that's very far from the base making them hardly usable. I think at any (non-bonsai) nursery you could have found something better.

Yeah, we'll see what happens with it. Can't do anything now even if I wanted to. I'm going to look for a nursery stock one next time, with more maturity to it and style it myself. Thanks for your input.

Good ones are hard to find. Then something with, some sort of maturity, maybe five year, or so. Will come in a gallon (about four liters) sized pot, packed with a massive bunch of tangled roots. You sort of need to, rake them out, do a minimal pruning, and let the tree recover. It might take a few years or so.
In the meantime, just look for info on bonsai. There's so many ideas on how to grow them (sort of like tomatoes).
Oh the raking root thing, look at you tube, under re-potting nursery, creating bonsai (no they never show the tree again,), just keep dreaming of new searches. you'd be amazed at the pile roots, on the cutting room floor.
and welcome
