Ficus microcarpa Ginseng - Please help! was created by FicusMicrocarpaGinsengPaul
Posted 8 years 3 months ago #26678I bought this wonderful Ficus microcarpa Ginseng from IKEA about 6 months ago, here in the UK. (It's big and very heavy!)
The past 3 weeks or so, it has started to lose its leaves and it is still loosing them still now that we in October.
I am getting very worried about it and especially when I water it approximately once a month.
I have been waiting until the soil is almost dry, then I water it in the sink by submerging the pot completely underwater, waiting until the bubbles stop then draining the pot off. (This is what the instructions say to do)
However, I have noticed since last time I watered it, that the soil seems to be staying very moist/wet and not drying out. The plant came with the white pot which incidentally has a drainage system in the bottom.
Now that we are in October the temperature has started to fall, and my house doesn't have a lot of natural light anyway, so I have now moved the plant to our east facing conservatory as that is the lightest area in the house (before the light never used to be a problem).
I have also attached photos in anticipation that it might help.
Please would you be able to help me by advising me what I could be doing to revive this plant to its true glory and halt its demise?
Thank you in advance!
Paul

Thank you .
2 hours? To browse read the most recent topics?
Here it is:
Summary of the other topic;
- It's not a bonsai, Ikea does not sell bonsai. It's a house plant.
- As it's not a bonsai, bonsai care guidelines do not apply. Look up guidelines for Ficus.
Plant in the oter topic even looks the same...

Posted 8 years 3 months ago #26693OK, so now it is established that its not actually a bonsai, would it still be beneficial buying the soil that Driver170 recommended?
Sorry for the questions and thanks.

No. That is soil for bonsai, that typically are outside, in a pot that has a drainage hole.
Not sure how many liters you'd need, but for such a big plant, I think at 10 UKL for 14 liters it'd be pretty expensive too.

Posted 8 years 3 months ago #26699Ficus hate wet soil so this grit soil is perfect, keeps the moisture , good drainage and lets air circulate inside. Also i believe ficus hate to be kept wet for more than 3 days so soil could land you into trouble if you don't get the watering right. Its still a tree like a bonsai and still functions just about the same.
