Do not be afraid to repot, take it out and wash away all the old soil with the stream of water.
You shouldn?t damage the roots that way, you might give them a quick cut, but don?t cut too much and wire it to the larger container as AUK suggested in some well draining substrate.
Good luck :)

I just repotted my Sageretia and did a slight root trim. The tree is a good size and healthy. I put it into a larger pot from a training pot. Once the weather drops below 55f (10c), I'll bring it inside and take care of it.

How much bigger should the new pot be? Right now my "mallsai" is in a 4x6 inch pot. I'm probably going to buy everything off amazon since I don't have a bonsai shop conveniently close by.

From what I've read, this tree is pretty hearty. If it were my tree, I would look at something that an octagon shape pot and about 9". They say to re pot every 2 years so think about how you can see this tree growing, and in which direction. Then it will tell you what will be the next pot. Make sure that the pot you purchase, has a hole so you can wire your tree to the pot.
When the tree gets big enough, you will find a happy marriage between tree and pot. I'm still learning about this tree species, so we can help each other.
