Help with Maple

I've had a Japanese Mountain Maple for a few months now, and I am struggling with what seems to be the drying out of the leaves. I keep it sufficiently watered and never leave it in the sunlight for extended periods of time (I currently live in SW Louisiana where the temperatures and sunlight can be really brutal). While the leaves that have been on the tree since I received it are having this problem, the tree is also putting out new growth - some of which is pretty rapid and looks healthy. I will attach a picture of the dryness (or what I think is dryness) and a picture of the new growth.
Any ideas on how to stop this?

Is it indoors?

I am here in Louisiana for work, and live in an apartment, so I don't have a good place to put it in the ground. When I get back home I will plant it in the ground.
Good plans. It should be possible to plant it now though. Do you have a shaded area where you can put it?

There's a spot on the east side of my building that I can keep it so it gets that good morning sun while it is still relatively cool out. I was doing this at first, but was having problems with an insect that was feasting on the leaves. I have since been keeping it on my balcony where there is a good mix of shade and sun throughout the day based on the suns' positioning.

That's probably better than keeping it indoors.
Make sure it really does get enough water, without drowning it.

Any thoughts on the browning of the leaves though?
