I think the best advice I can give you is go to a garden center, and start with something with maybe more branching, etc. I think that if you want to stick with this tree, you'll have to grow it for probably 20 or so years before theirs something to style- again- garden centers- find a semi developed tree, and go from there. I bought a juniper from a garden center about a year ago for 40 dollars, cleaned it out and turned it into a respectable tree. With that being said, you definitely have to search for the hidden gems of a garden center. Find a tree with a good nebari, and taper and go from there. My advice with conifers is find a tree that already has some structure, because most likely you wont be able to change (drastically) the form of the tree, (although that's excluding grafting). I recommend deciduous trees because they are open to many styling possibility's - and they show the seasons so they are a win win- don't get me wrong i like conifers, The majority of my trees are conifers- hope this helped
