Hi I currently have three of those "ginseng ficus"
What they do with these is they are true ficus and what the nursery does is grow it to a mature age and repot it with the roots showing and trim feeder roots off so that
"Thick trunk" is really just huge tap roots that they reported to thow those off.
That's why you always see a scar on the top where it was cut off
Simply said they did a trunk chop .
That's why there's so many itty bitty branches, they usually grow back at the cut point .
I'm not an expert and I could be wrong but I have some knowledge of bonsai.

It is almost correct. Techniques are used, indeed, to grow these fat roots (that I consider unnatural, and not so nice).
The top however is another variety that has been grafted onto the root base.
