It means that you don't have your first bonsai. Your plant is in a pot for house plants. For bonsai, we don't use inner plastic pots. The plant is not shaped like a bonsai.
It's not a bonsai, nor is it a mallsai. It's a shaped houseplant.

The label says ficus microcarpa and the caring advice is sun-yes, water-yes, outdoors-yes, edible-no

This is my second attempt at trying to style a bonsai. This is a boxwood from nursery stock. Constructive criticism is much appreciated. Thanks.

The answer is NO. Look on youtube the bonsais in the japanese nurseries - these are bonsai.
Your question can be translated in: can it ever be a piece of art? No - not this one.
If you want a bonsai, first year learn on the net, then look for a suitable tree in the nursery. Buy a small tree - not a bonsai. You will make it a bonsai in 10 years or more. That's what we do. Dont rush.

But I see a lot of potential in your tree. I would wire the branches and plant it in the ground or larger canister to thicken the trunk. I think you were lucky to find this one in the nursery.

I do not completely agree with Winter that it cannot become a bonsai. It is not impossible - but you would have to completely start over with the plant.
Read this topic, it's the same type of plant:
