Hi there this is one of the plants I have its a Juniperus chinensis I've had it growing freely in a large nursery pot for about a year and my plans are to let it grow for a while and eventually turn it into a formal upright of somesort.

I'm thinking I may plant it in the ground to help grow trunk a bit quicker. I suppose the questions I have are along the development of the tree to get to my goal of a formal upright.

How do I improve the nebari in a juniper?

If I plant it in the ground what should I do to the soil to help aid in its growth?

should I do some pruning or shaping now or just wait a few more years Into its development?

You'll notice the tree has two types of foliage - mature and juvenile foliage. The juvenile foliage may be a result of stress.
I'd put it in the ground and let it grow for a few years. I'd wait with reducing the height until it's settled, healthy, and putting out lots of new growth.

It does not look suitable for a formal upright the trunk is not straight. Plant it in the ground.

Improving nebari is done by spreading and trimming roots. However, as with many junipers there is a direct link between branches and individual roots, this is more tricky then with deciduous trees.
IF you want an upright, tie it to something straight, like bamboo. Reduce top-growth, and wire a number of branches out to the side to get thicker trunk below (And thus taper). Remove from these sacrifice branche all green in the first 10-20 cm as growth extends: This will allow light to reach the inner foliage, which you will eventually need to build your tree. In theory, you coudl start shaping those branches already, but it is not easy to have some branches extand aggressively, and shape the rest.
