I'm 99% sure this is a Juniper. But would like confirmation, also the stones are glued in and I think the other plant is fake. I'm assuming I should re-pot this fellow? It's about 6.5 inches tall and just over a foot in length now. I don't think they trimmed this at all while it sat on the shelf. Right now it's in my office getting indirect sunlight per the Costco instructions but I think it needs to be outside during the day. The soil was bone dry when I got it and have gotten it to moisten a bit over a few days of watering.

Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated!

Normally, when my plants are "bone dry", I water them, actually, i try not to let them get that way.

and yes it's a juniper, and it really needs to be out in in the sun. not on a desk.

Remove the glued-on rocks and the fake plant if it really is fake. I wouldn't re-pot it properly at this time of year, rather slip-pot it into normal potting compost in a normal pot in order to let it grow.

n.b. look up the term ''mall-sai''

Once I got the soil to be somewhat moist during the day I've backed off on watering it. I just didn't want it to die after I just got it.

What you have purchased is a decorative plant with decorative stones and decorative dried moss in a decorative pot.
It will survive at an office desk for a limited period of time. That is what is expected. See it like buying a bouquet of flowers; after some time it wilts and you just buy a new one.

Real bonsai are sold by bonsai nurseries, bonsai enthousiasts or you can acquire them at bonsai clubs.
If you're really into bonsai, you'll need to learn what bonsai is, how to take care for them, and how to train them.

What is really interesting about this, is that there seems to be a very young Juniper, and a bunch of very young shoots potted under the mass foliage, to add more foliage. Can you notice this? am I being clear on what I am trying to say?. It is like they went beyond just selling a young Juniper, but they also "enhanced" its foliage by potting what seem like young shoots, or might even be fake plants under it. I like the comparison with a bouquet of flowers.

Anyway... there seems to be a real Juniper plant there, if you want you could re-pot it and let it grow, so you don't lose the money spent.

Yeah I see that. I did a search for "mall-sai" and found this - (as recommended above). I got the fake plant out. It's currently outside (I work from home), and I'm going to try to remove the fake rocks. I know I'll need to prune it a bit, but am glad to get the tips and advice here. Hope to save this fella!

You shouldn't prune it. The plant is too young, and already suffering stress from emergency re-potting. You should simply re-pot on better soil, and let the plant grow for a few years. This will be great for you, because you will learn basic techniques such as watering, and keeping your tree alive. You should consider planting the tree on the ground.
