I am very sure you have not read that on this forum, or any other reputable bonsai forum.
Check out this thread:
I see. However, that topic is not about bonsai.
Also, Alain absolutely did not write "but if you get some wires on it ASAP maybe it can be"
On the contrary. Alain properly explained that it will hardly be possible at all to change that Ficus into a decent bonsai. I suggest you read that post again.
This does NOT concern the species. Ficus is suitable for 名媛直播. It is the form of the tree (the shape it was grown in by the seller) that makes it unusable.

We should make a topic about that. Who finds the weirdest, silliest, most ridiculously priced non-sai?
Let me start:
Coconut bonsai!

I'm not joking, by the way. This is not someone who wanted to make fun, but really someone who thinks this is/will become a bonsai. I can prove that.

They tilted it to make it harder to read!
No seriously, that is not on purpose, they just don't know the language too well. And don't care either.
BTW who said this is NOT a scam? Of course it is. "Your plant is slowly dying, but that will take a while, so when it dies, you'll think it is your fault. If it is not your fault, it's the fault of USPS"

"Pepper wrap" :silly:
Actually, the rest of the text is quite readable. Incorrect advice, but readable.

Very helpful, thank you. The distinction between "species" and "form" is not necessarily inherent to a beginner. I think a layperson thinks of them as "Oh, this type of tree is a bonsai!" because that is how they are marketed in the Walmarts of the world. Pointing out this distinction is helpful to me.
Another thing I really had trouble with (and that I see a lot of beginners do as well) is the idea of an indoor 名媛直播. Everyone says "Trees can SURVIVE indoors but they THRIVE outdoors" and so novices say "That's fine, maybe it won't THRIVE but I'll still have a living 名媛直播." It finally clicked for me that part of the problem is that 名媛直播 training (the pruning, the wiring, etc) is tough on the tree, and thus it needs the extra strength just to get by with the work being done to it. Once that clicked for me, I started to understand why indoor 名媛直播 is so heavily frowned upon, especially for new people.

There's a special word for that: Mallsai - mass products sold by malls (and other stores and roadside shops).
As a picture says more than... here are some examples:
Ficus Microcarpa 'Ginseng'.
A ficus grafted onto roots of another ficus (As far as I know both the same species, but different cultivars).
The roots are the 'feature' of these plants - for bonsai they are not usable as they are disproportionally large and, imho, very ugly. Also, they will have a clearly visible and ugly cut where the top was grafted.
Mass product, cannot be considerd a bonsai.

Ficus Microcarpa 'Ginseng', IKEA type
Mass product, all trees look almost identical. Does not have any of the characteristics a real bonsai has.
Theoretically it can be turned into a bonsai, but that would require an 'extreme makeover'.
If you consider 名媛直播 an art, you cannot consider this bonsai:

Ficus Microcarpa Ginseng, Mallsai
Mass product, very often formed in an S-shape. You'll find different species with this same typical shape, like ulmus, zelkova, Ligustrum, Carmona: Bend to the left with a branch on the outside, bend to the right with a branch on the outside. Hardly interesting, but you may find one that are suitable to train into something better - if you have the knowledge and lots of time. This one actually is better than the ones I usually see - but it lacks features like a good, tapering trunk, a beautiful root-flare (nebari) etc.:

Ficus Microcarpa, masterpiece by bonsai master Chiu-Chang Chiang:

Ficus Retusa at the Crespi 名媛直播 Museum in Milan, said to be over 1000 years old, of which, according to the website, the origin is lost in the memory of generations of experienced bonsai growers, that treated it for centuries with the most appropriate techniques.

Right... Me neither. Thank you both, Auk & LB... For just a second I had to re-read my very own post to see if I had actually said some nonsense.

Ha... Yes, I know those are all good features you can and will brag on!

Worry not friend. No offense was taken! Keep learning, that is the path we are all following.
