Just wondering.. Would it not be better for the tree if it was not growing on it's side?
Making this into a bonsai is not going to be an easy road. It is currently not possible to see the trunkline from the pictures you showed. What you want to look for are:
- The start of the main roots. Often you can lift the plant from the pot, peel away the soil untill you reach the main roots. These will become your surface roots, so it is important to check those: The best looking roots often define the front of your tree.
- Decide how tall your tree will be; Based on the diameter of the trunk you can normally decide on a height of 6 to 12 times the trunk diameter. In that range you should have a look to find a natural point to cut back to (Often a point where two or more branches occur: One branche becomes the new top, and one a side-branch. The chop should afterwards ideally be hidden behind the new leading top-branch.
Before you start chopping the tree, posdt a picture of your envisioned front, and draw in the chop you have in mind, and what the main trunk looks like.

Here is a little update about a year later , I've basically let it grow free apart from an air layer at the top of the tree . My future plans are another air layer to shorten the tree even further and create a nice taper , and I think I will let the rest grow freely for another year .
Thoughts ?

How do you prevent substrate falling off from the pot?
And how do you call this technique of growing bonsai on its side?
My neck hurts.....
