Chinese Elm is the species that originates and is grown for bonsai in China as well as Korea. But now in Holland also. It is the one you will find for sale in garden centres etc. It is a hardy species and very tough which it is why it is sometimes described as "indoor". My large one is kept out at all times, it is far too big to be put anywhere inside, and also all my small ones.
This species will survive perfectly well in temperatures down to -12C. Siberian Elm is different species and will not do well inside. It is a much less common tree and not usually found for sale.
I find that no species of tree including Serrissa etc do not do well in my house, I have had them over the years and none have survived. Unlike my hardy species of which I have about 90 in various stages, and whilst I have lost some, which will always be a risk, nearly all have made it. My original Maple bought 15 years ago is still going strong and getting better every year.
So, if you must have a tree inside, don't expect it to live forever. If you can grow species that can live in your garden. They will be happier and so will you,

Most if not all will be best outside. The lucky thing for me is that my windowsill's seal came off because my friend accidently peeled it of. So the cool and cold and the humidity seeps in the windowsill giving my chinese elm, box and privet a similar environment to the outdoors. So i can have an outdoorish environment indoors!! (i think i am rather lucky) :D

Thanks all, I have a corner in the basement, with no heat, and partial sun. Hopefully that will do. Funny, getting attached these little things. Hardly had them long at all.

What are you going to do about light? All plants need sunlight and a basement is not the ideal place for plants.

IF you are bringing the plant indoors because you expect the winter to be too cold, at least bring it into dormancy. Then place it in a cold location to stay dormant till spring.

There is a window there, but they'll dormant first. I'll probably wait temperature gets into the 20s (-7c). Maybe bury the pots, but then the snow will bury them. Of course they get buried in the wild.
