First of all i would say it is malsai (sorry to break it to you) second of all we need a more closer pic of the leaves but from those pics i can tell that it may be a chinese elm, but close ups would be better. Bonsi arent really hard to maintain. We need better pics to know what species it is and therefore determine where to put it. Water when the soil starts to turn dry/is just damp. One of the other things you need to do is feed it. Look on "bonsai4me"and read the basics (on the top, below the main title ) or even look at the basics on this website. Mainly for you look at feeding and watering. Wait for furthe replies as i know many people ae more experienced than me.

Need close ups.

Mallsai is a term which combines the word "Shopping Mall" and "名媛直播". Effectively it refers to a mass-produces plant, which should be a bonsai, but really isn't.

This one is actually not that bad as mallsai. But it will take a lot of work to make into something that does not look like nr thirteen in the dozen.

Do not get discoraged though. In the end you have to like the plant, not someone else. Just keep in mind: When people on bonsai fora speak of bonsai, they refer to something else.

The thing is, chinese elms do best outdoors. I keep mine in an unheated romm and windowsill (i have no garden) so if you have a garden then you can get a wooden bench or make a bench as long as it is stable. It is definetely a chinese elm.

Another thing is feeding:

the good news is that these guys (chinese elms) are tough.

of course it's tough, it's an elm. How do you know it's Chinese, looks just like these elms (Siberian elm, Ulmus pumila) that grow all over around here. Chinese Elms, Ulmus parvifolia seed in the fall, my little weeds seed in the spring. Just wondering, how else I can tell.

I can see why you say this. The thing is that this "bonsai" has been mass produced by the look of it and the main species that is mass produced that looks similar to the picture is chinese elm. Also the way that that the leaves are connected to the branches/twigs looks like a chinese elm. The branch structure also looks like that of the chinese elm.

I am not saying you ae wrong, i mean who knows? It is just in my opinion that the chnce of it being a chinese elm is about 90% maybe higher.

Thank you Bob, yes now that I look, (at this and other pictures) there is a significant difference. Chinese Elms are prettier, Siberian's will make good practice though, there's lots of them around here.

Siberian elms must be some brilliant project. In britain all the english elms are in south sussex and south cornwall and i am in london and the amout of soul survivers in london are very few. Elms are fantastic subjects for bonsai and will give you an awesome chance to try a lot on those elms. I have never tried an elm before as i cannot find them anywhere. Good luck! ;)
