From you I would have expected you would recommend Hydrochloric acid. You've done research this time and supplied proof. There is hope!

it seems to be ok at the moment, it sits on our shoe cupboard in the hallway and gets light coming in from a bedroom. there is a huge amount of info online which will take me ages to go through, so if anyone has any vital tips and advice please let me know. As i said it is really sentimental and my last tree did not last long at all!!
one question, should I spray the leaves with water and if so how often?
Many Thanks,
Nicola.

Drip tray.
The stones are ok although i may be wrong about that, if they are on the surface then they are no help, but no bad, if in soil then that would promote better drainage.
As you can see on the photo, they are on top of the soil. The stones serve no purpose and should be removed.

Yes, you were told the same on this forum. However, it is not a bonsai.

According to what I have read, if the plant came with rocks when you bought it, remove them. Any artificially polished or colored rocks, or rocks with glue, will be bad. Also if the rocks are too large they can effect root growth? (not sure how true this last part is, anyone know?) However, a thin layer of gravel or live moss will not harm your tree at all, it will help prevent soil displacement when watering. My plant currently has a nice layer of moss and a few rocks on top, and it is doing just fine.
I water my ficus when the first inch of the soil feels dry/almost dry to the touch. I just use a sprayer on the hose, although rain water is also very good for plants. Ficus are outdoor trees, so as long as its warm, put it outside. I don't know about where you live, but it has been very humid where I live and I can tell my ficus is enjoying the humidity.

The is a plant. A living being, which requires lots of light.
Standing in a hallway with light coming in through the bedroom is in no way near enough to keep this plant healthy!
Moss on the soil surface hampers proper drying of the soil, is host to insects and eventually will harm the bark around the roots. Best is to just have a clean soil surface.
