You will find a lot of varying opinions here as well as articles online. There are resources that will tell you it is an outdoor tree, an indoor tree, or a little of both.
The most important thing is that it receives plenty of light, either natural or artificial. Make sure to water it properly, fertilize when necessary, and you shouldn't have a problem keeping it in whatever environment you prefer. Common sense tells us that trees are naturally meant to live outdoors which is the best environment for your tree. If you choose to keep it inside and provide it all the necessary treatment, it will survive, but not as well as it would outside.
My philosophy is to research it thoroughly. Do the best you can for the tree and record your results in a journal of some type. Your tree will either flourish and you can feel accomplished or it will not do well and you will learn how to tend to your next Chinese Elm. You will most definitely learn something positive no matter what happens.

The loss of leaves at this time of year is indicative of poor conditions. Keeping the tree indoors is the reason for this. It is not cold enough in the winter, and too low humidity in the summer. The light level is too low also. If you insist on keeping it indoors you will be very luck if it is still alive in another six months.

hmm, if I do move it outside now (September) I know what will happen I will forget about it and therefore not water it etc unless it will be OK till Spring then I bring indoors again. Landscaping work being done atm so would just be on a bench. But will be weird as like to see it everyday on the windowsill. Don't know what to do really!

Just an update my 名媛直播 seems to be coming back to life fresh new green leaves and on the side with no leaves new leaves appearing slowly - keep spraying it twice a day but only watering as and when needs it in Autumn here now.
