It is perfectly normal for deciduous trees to lose leaves and grow new ones. That is what this tree is doing It is one of those species that seems to hold leaves even though it is frosty and will drop them late and then bud again. Watering should be when the tree needs it not to a schedule, as that will lead to overwatering. The soil does not look too bad, but if the tree is potbound it might need re potting, now being the best time.

I made the mistake of keeping the tree inside all the time, and apparently I should have maintained higher humidity levels. The last weeks she stands always outside, we have a cool spring here, but all in all it is much better than inside. What bothers me is the color of the bark, that has turned quite white, I have never seen that before. I will re-pot it with some new soil mix and try to control the watering a little better. And what about fertilizing? I should wait a little I think, until more buds start to blossom.

If it were mine, I would overpot it in a larger container, using regular potting soil and keeping the plant out of pouring rain. Come spring, clean out the roots and do a regular repot in suitable medium.

Yes, that's the plan. Hope it goes well and she reacts quite well, because it's really starting to test my patience!

It looks like it needs more sun to me. My elms need a few hours of sunlight each day to get the buds to open and keep them healthy.

Well, I have changed it's soil without trimming any roots and hope now for the best. This morning there were at least 10 new green buds in different places. Let's hope they will blossom and that my bonsai is off it's 'shocked' stated.
