And yes, the one in my profile picture also died. I think I overwatered it. It was outside and it's been raining a lot here and the bark was soggy and brown underneath, not good. It also had moss on it , and I've been reading on here that moss is not good for trees and that a lot of bonsai artists will put moss on their trees for shows but not keep it on the trees full time. I think I'm going to get a small greenhouse or enclosed structure for my trees for next winter. That way they can be outside but still sheltered. I had them in a lean to type structure where we keep the firewood, and covered them, but I will be better prepared for next winter.

Shame, it sounds really hard to grow plants where you live. Im surprised you don't live in a desert. A green house sounds like a good idea for the area you live in.. good idea :). Shame realizing you've been looking after dead trees can't be fun hahaha

That is a shame. The tree in your profile pic was very beautiful. Over watering by eager bonsai enthusiasts (like myself :) ) is a leading cause of dead trees. I hear a lot of bad things about moss by American bonsai artists, but in Japan a lot of nurseries will leave the moss covering on year round. At least that's what Ive gathered from watching "The 名媛直播 Art of Japan". Every last one of the tress in Kouka En nursery has heavy moss coverage.

If you havent watched that series I suggest checking it out. Best bonsai show on youtube!

My pine has moss on it too...but it's grown naturally on the tree. I didn't put it there.
I discourage people from adding moss to a tree because normally moss and trees have different watering needs. If you try to keep the soil moist enough to keep added moss alive it will eventually rot the roots of your bonsai and it will die. Moss that has grown there naturally has the same watering needs. There is a big difference.

James, different places have different growing conditions, so moss in pots may be helpful in some places and bad in others. Also if you have moss growing in your pots its always harder to tell if the pot needs watering or not. Where I live I'm told its helpful to have moss on your pots in summer, and remove them for the winter. Our harsh summer dries out the pots really quickly and in winter moss can keep the soil wet for too long, leading to root rot.
