beginner questions and tree identification was created by Yelfimov

I have always been intrigued by bonsai and found this start last summer in my yard. I potted it in a regular pot and it is still alive after winter (surprisingly). I am unsure of the variety of tree. Also, I am planning on repotting it in a true bonsai pot. I started this with doubts, but I am now attached to my little tree :).

My questions:
What kind of tree is it?
Do you repot and prune at the same time?
Should I start with wire for training this early or wait to see if it takes in the new pot?
Any other tips or training/pruning ideas would be helpful.

Thanks!!

i think that tree is not big enought to aply wiring and pruning. if the trank did not reach 1inch thick you dont have to hurry. Pruning in that size wont help the tree to bare more brunch, the trank cant support more brunch. About wirring it wont gonna make a sence due to small brunch are too soft that needs more time to harden and follow the style aplyed and too long time is enough to make scare and wiremarkings on the plant and if you dont remove the wire it will slow the growth needed. Goodluck and welcome to the furom.

Cleaner is right. It's too small to be pruned and wired now. Let it grow for a year at least. It need to thicken up before work is done to it. The picture is really small but it resembles a juniper. If it is a juni it needs to be kept outside.

i beleive it is an cedar arborvitee but im not positive. i have a hedge row of them and a mame sized one going on 3 years ...
now you have to leave it to grow. you will also need to decide how big you want the final result. your best bet is to double your pot size and bury it in the ground keep it fertalized to get some good growth
seedlings need time and patience

Let me toss in my 2P then.

I think that if you want to get some more extreme bends in the main trunk, now is as good a time to wire the main stem and give it some shape as any. Just make sure you are carefull not to break it, and remove the wire before it bites in the bark,Once the shape sets, you can then still let it grow thicker.

Personally, I do not understand why people want to wait with giving the tree movement untill the trunk has become thick and dificult to shape. Think saplings are flexible, easy to form and very extreme bends can be made very easily.

I agree with leatherback. It is easier to shape a trunk when it is small and flexible. You might have to rewire it, depending on the species. Some species can grow fast and spring back after the wire is removed. It would help if you could post a bigger picture of the tree, for i.d. purposes.

this is more of a grow and chop species in my opinion, at least at this stage. it'll b 3 to 5 years before any of it will begin to b tough to wire

if it was a pine i would wholeheartedly agree

Yup, I agree too...
Put some wire on, loosely though, and chuck it in the ground for a few years... Checking the wire carefully of course from time to time, just so that it doesn't bite into the bark.
