Posted 2 years 7 months ago #76644Has nothing to do with wanting to use it or not. If you buy insecticides, these typically do not work on spider mites, unless perhaps you live in lesser controlled locations. Spider mites fall in the group of spider-like animal (arachnids). The sprays on the market here need to have the label "Also against spider mites" or they only target insects.Sorry LB, but that's not true, ANY pyrethroid will kill them almost instantly, and household concentrations are harmless to humans.
If you want to use it or not, that's up to you, but it does work...
I was not talking a broad-spectrum product, I was referring specifically to insecticides.

I understand what you're saying LB, but my response has nothing to do with them being insects or not, they're not, and this is a fact.
But Pyrethrins (organics) and Pyrethroids (synthetics) are insecticides, and works perfectly for arachnids, and there are hundreds of products all over the world based on them, even on Europe... So yes, just have in mind that the product you're buying (if you choose to) is the one that you need.

Which is exactly my point. An insecticide does not typically work on non-insects

Which makes them not only insecticide, but also a miticide.

Kind thanks to everyone who took the time to respond!
I ended up using a miticide (for some reason I didn't bother to use the specific term and instead just wrote 'insecticide') that has a translaminar/local systemic mechanism of action and works mostly by making the spider's eggs sterile.
It worked but the downside is that the leaves have turned partly yellow because of the chemicals and as a result the photosynthesis process is somewhat affected. I probably sprayed in a concentration that was too high.
Anyhow, I ended up trimming one of the bonsai as it was needing it anyway and just left the other one to see how it would develop. For the summer and maybe a short period of autumn I will keep them outside but that cannot go on for too long as we have quite low temperatures here in my country.
And to whoever was asking, yes, I have quite the background of plants, the spider mites were probably transferred from another plant, though I only had them on my Hedera helix and it was a different species than the one I had on my bonsai.

I use a mix of pepper, garlic and soapy water.
It works for mites.

I have got the short fat hairy legs needed, but sadly not the requisite number!
Looked at that blended peppers and garlic sauce and thought "that looks like a nice marinade for the barbecue..."
