Well, Chaenomeles japonica or Japanese Flowering Quince is a difficult tree to keep in the tropics.
Its roots are prone to have nematodes gall issues, and Spider Mites are always a big problem.
How to get rid of those pests, the mites?
Follow below the technique developed by the dutch immigrants who are the best flower producers in Brazil and let's hope it works for bonsai.

First my quince in the summer:


When I have noticed the leaves wilting, it was already too late:
Spider Mites!




So the recipe:
1-) Take ? of a coconut bar soap and dissolve it in hot water, in a common pan.


2-) Take two different kinds of peppers and three garlic pieces, and chop them with a sharp knife.
I have used a red Mexican Jalape?a and the Brazilian Malagueta (the smaller one)


3-) Mix them in well the blender with alcohol vinegar


4-) let this mix sit for a week in a closed bottle


5-) Filter 4ml of the strained pepper juice into the water+coconut soap (1 liter), and spray the resulting mix under the leaves every three days for two weeks.


Either it will work or if the quince will die!

Please do keep us posted, I hear peppers can even keep squirrels, away, but then they develop a taste for peppers.

I wonder if it would work on other trees.

Your little mites, really are not killing any thing, as ugly as they are. Maybe peppers will kill 'em, I never tried. If they get really bad, use chemical warfare, from the hardware store. in a few months, those little buggers will freeze to death.

I really lost a tree because of thr spider mites. As they are not insects, a systemic acaricid is the chemical solution.
The whole point is spider mites are very prolific, and each generation develops resistance against the products used, so we have to change methods every week.
I live in a sub tropical climate, so they don't freeze to death in the winter, they just keep sucking the leaves. Which in the long run, kill trees.

Yes, it works against mites.
The original recipe was used in roses.

Spider mites ave killed several of my trees, and are the main reason I don't do indoors anymore. Pepper and other remedies didn't work and I never found anything before they got three of my favorites. There is something on the azaleas outside which looks just like Clicio's picture. I'll try anything.

BTW, Clicio is in the southern hemisphere and this is about as cold it gets.

Yeap, mite infestation indoors is much, much worse, almost impossible to be controlled.
I have managed to save an indoors hibiscus from the mites by defoliating it and spraying with a mix of dishwashing soap, isopropyl alcohol and water. I had to spray it every day for 10 days.
WARNING: I would refrain from doing this if I was not in the tropics, with a tropical species.

I guess my recipe is working alright!
Even if the remaining leaves are sad and ugly looking, there's no signal of mites whatsoever, and...
