My chrystal ball is broken. Without telling us what you are doing, we cannot say what you are doing wrong.
Please tell us species, where you are and what season it is, placement of the tree and your care.
If you keep the tree indoors, that is the problem. By far the most common reason for beginners trees dieing in BE forum threads.
If you keep it outdoors and are approaching winter it may just be the natural cycle of a deciduous species.

If you took the tree inside just for the picture ok, but if you have had it inside then you are killing it. Get it outside, if as Tropfrog says it is approaching winter then the leaves will die but otherwise have you been watering properly? What have you been doing to it?

Thanks- the tree is kept outside and was brought inside just for this photo. The species of the tree is Trident Maple and I have kept it outside in a partially sunny area of my yard since purchasing it in January of this year. I live in New Jersey and the climate has been generally moderate but with some colder spells as we approach Spring. I have examined the moisture of the tree daily and only water it only when the soil appears dry upon inserting the tip of my finger.
Hope this info is sufficient- thanks for the help.

Are there new buds forming? It is spring now so it should be starting to grow new leaves. It has been dormant for a few months now right?

Yes – the specimen has been dormant for sometime. My concern are the black, shriveling leaves. Is this typical for the species or is it a sign of a problem?
Thanks all!

It looks like those are the leaves from the last growing season. When where those leaves full and green?

The specimen arrived in January with no leaves. Leaves began to grow that were green but quickly shriveled and became the black you now see.

That sounds like frost damage where the tree had been kept in warm conditions allowing buds to develop too soon, now I think you just need to wait. The leaves should have dropped but you could remove them. You should be able to see new buds coming. Where did the tree come from, what area?

I think Geoff nailed it. We get trees produced in the netherlands shipped to our stores in sweden. That is the standard reaction all of them gets if not protected in spring frost.
