Hello everyone,
I have just bought this Itoigawa Juniper but I have a couple concerns, so let?s see If you can help me. Do you think it will back bud? because I believe it doesn?t have too much density in some areas.
On the other hand, would you recommend me to just densify the tree or should I get rid of the unnecessary branches?
Thank you for the help, it is my first Juniper and I am a bit uneased with some decisions.
Regards,
Guillermo.

What you need to do is style the free. Decide what you would like it to be and then wire and prune. It may back bud if pruned and wired correctly

Junipers do backbud, but not reliable and seldom where you want it.
I think this tree have enough branches and foliage for a big styling and thinning out. I dont see the need for more dense growth that you see. But as allways: its your tree and I havent seen it live.

Hello.
Well, as you just bought it, I would spend the next months thinking about branch selection...
As far as I know, Junipers do backbud, but on their own time, it's not easy.
By now, (besides of watering care) I would just remove dead foliage, watch it grow and think about it.

Thank you for the reply,
For now I will repot it on a strainer because I want the trunk to get thick and I will take a look to the nebari.
As Albas said, I will wait to prune the tree after repotting so I decide which branches do I keep.

"Just bought it" you say? I always wait at least a year before I do any big work on my teees. Repotting and root pruning is one of them.

I will agree to the repotting, with a good program of fertilization and watering and in a year, it will be ready for a nise in shape

Oh I see, then I will until next year to repot.
But it’s safe to prune it now isn’t it?.
