If you live in a place with particularly harsh winters there can be need of protection over winter. A cold frame or an unheated greenhouse or shed. Never bring them inside in winter.

I actually do have pretty bad winters. I am a bit worried about the constant freeze thaw occurring in the pots. I have a few little sheds I can put them into, is total darkness ok or should there be a window? I am more concerned about the conifers I have not having enough light over the winter. I keep a lawn mower inside one of the sheds, so I would be worried about the fumes, as you get a pretty strong petrol whiff upon opening the door.

Sound like they will be fine outside. If you decide to put them in the shed, they will not need light. In winter without leafs no photosyntethis is going on. I dont know for sure about petrol fumes. But as long as you are ok beeing there I think it is fine.

What about coniferous trees?
