I am worried my Japanese maple trees will not make it through the winter. I got them this spring, and they have not grown much all year. Do you think they will survive?

they are still really small after all summer. What do you think I am doing wrong? I really don't want to lose them.

Red leaf varieties grow slowly. I have a few from seed now.. 4 years old or so. They have reached about 30cm in height. And I have regular green japanese maples that grow faster than I can cut them.

Dont worry about leaf falling. It is just preparing itself for winter. They are decidious trees.

If you live in a place with particularly harsh winters there can be need of protection over winter. A cold frame or an unheated greenhouse or shed. Never bring them inside in winter.

I actually do have pretty bad winters. I am a bit worried about the constant freeze thaw occurring in the pots. I have a few little sheds I can put them into, is total darkness ok or should there be a window? I am more concerned about the conifers I have not having enough light over the winter. I keep a lawn mower inside one of the sheds, so I would be worried about the fumes, as you get a pretty strong petrol whiff upon opening the door.

If you have constant freeze thaw cycles it is not harsh winter. A harsh winter is below -10 for several weeks without any thawing.

Sound like they will be fine outside. If you decide to put them in the shed, they will not need light. In winter without leafs no photosyntethis is going on. I dont know for sure about petrol fumes. But as long as you are ok beeing there I think it is fine.
