changing from outdoor to indoor was created by samalens32299

I recently bought a cork bark chinese elm that had previously been kept outdoors 24/7. I feel I will get more enjoyment from it being indoors. I understand they can be kept indoors but will need a period of adjustment. Can anyone help me with when is the best time of year to make the change from outdoor to indoor and how to go about it? I'm terrified of doing it any harm. TIA

They might survive indoors a few years. But bare survival is not enough for developing bonsai. What you need is full health and vigour, which cannot be achieved indoors. Kep the tree outdoors.

Thank you for the advice. I guess I should make some way of displaying it that's visible from the house. It's too beautiful and special not to be able to enjoy it all year round xx

I keep all my trees outdoors and enjoy them every day of the year. Just as it is not good for the tree to be inside all winter I am sure its no good for people. Just go outside, take some fresh air and enjoy your tree.

I think you have made a totally incorrect assumption here. I am not an indoor person - I am always outdoors - I have a horse and a dog so I spend most of my life outdoors!! Ask anyone who has a horse on DIY how much fresh air I get. I'm not offended by your assumption - I just thought it would be nice to enjoy this particular addition to my botanic collection indoors, lol. I will do what is best for the tree, if you and others say it's better outdoors then that's where it will stay.

I remember in my horse days that owning the horse was excellent exercise, and I spent a lot of time outdoors. Every now and then I also got to ride her.

Topfrog is right. The tree needs to be outside where its genome developed. Maybe you can put it on a stand close to a window?

Thank you so much. I am lucky and get to ride every day. My 22 year old son wanted a 名媛直播 for Xmas, strange request I thought but when it arrived I decided I had to have one too. His was sold as an indoor bonsai (Japanese Elm) and arrived in full leaf (13 years old). Mine is a Japanese Cork Bark Shohin Chinese Elm (15 years old) and arrived having always been outdoors so not in leaf. I have kept it outdoors since but had a look on the internet to see if mine too could come inside and it said it could. To be sure and to find out how to go about doing it, I came on here for advice. I want to keep my tree as happy and healthy as possible but I am obviously a complete novice and as the tree came with no care instructions I'm relying on the kind folk on here to help me out. We all have to start somewhere, lol

What we do in Japan is display the trees indoors for a few days every now and then. For New Years, my wife wanted to put a pine on our dinner table, because pine trees symbolize New Years. If I had 52 displayable trees, I could have a tree indoors every week ;)

BTW, I just started a large fir tree bonsai project for Xmas. The idea is to let it grow about 2m tall, and make it look like a Xmas tree ;)
