Japanese White Pine ... Possible Fungus? was created by TomTom29

Hi,

After recently acquiring a my first two Japanese White Pines, I was wondering if anyone would be able to offer an opinion as to what this might be on the branch? I am presuming it is some type of fungus.

Thanks in advance.

Instant breath of relief...

Thanks for your reply, given the overall health of the tree I wouldn't imagine it has a fungus problem.

Another new species to add to my garden - and another world of new anxieties!

Ahh I didn't think of that - from what I understand there is a school of thought whereby some people encourage lichen's

Looks like lichen, which means it is too wet.
The usual advice is "moss is good, lichen is bad". But I think both are bad if they are growing on trunks and branches.

Lichen is fine, leave it, it is not a problem. Moss on the trunk is not so good and means it is too wet so it should be removed.

Got it all wrong, sorry, my bad.
It is exactly the opposite of what I said.
Moss on trunks is bad, not lichen.
Thanks for pointing it out to me M5eaygeoff. I better shut up from now on.

Lichen is a mutual symbiosis between algae and fungi. Quite interesting little plants.
