Interesting: in my language we call them ( literally translated) crust moss, never though that of them as anything else as moss. Reading more into it it's indeed a symbiotic organism ( fungus and algae) referred to ( again in my language) as moss. Learned something again, tx

All good and interesting to know. Will be doing some further research to understand lichen better. Having looked over my other white pine this evening I've found a couple on there too.
I've always removed moss, especially around the trunk base due to it holding moisture.
I've just purchased a rather unloved very large larch and that is covered in moss - so got some work to do on that one - I'll be interested to see what the ratio of moss to lichen is on this tree once I pick it up.

Yes, I do Think they need high humidity. But also they thrive as best in somewhat cooler conditions. Not sure about all species thou. Rain dears live exclusivly on lichen in the winters up here.
Do you have any in humid Brasil?
