We tend to have a small number of children and treat them very carefully. We are not trees.

The pine trees here have hundreds of offspring underneath them. By next year most of them are dead, so the trees have hundreds more. It sounds a little hard hearted but most seedlings die, because that's what trees do. If one of yours dies there is not a lot to do other than get another.
