Interesting that the young guys are all for physical books and the old guy is for electronic media. (73 day before yesterday).leatherback wrote:

OK, Guess I will toss out my library..
I do hear what you say; Websites can bring new insights straight away whereas books do not change. But.. A good book will be good for a long time. Some things will be outdated. But basic concepts will not. And there is just something about pulling out a book, sitting in the garden and flipping through..
My first books said pots should be brown ceramic or blue for flowering trees. None of them mention literati style. They all say soil mix should be sand, loam, and perlite. One book, 名媛直播 with American Trees, mentions American trees and the rest are all Japanese trees, and on. They are practically useless in today's bonsai culture.
There are a lot of beginners with questions here and the answers very often reference websites but I don't remember seeing an answer refer to a book.
My wife and I have the same debate, BTW. When we travel somewhere she has to decide what books to take but I take my entire library.

I have often suggested buying a book, and usually I say join a club too. Not sure where you got the bit about young guys wanting books and old guys electronic media, I am not a young guy and I hate trying to read from a screen, obviously old books go out of date as was said, but new books are fully up to date, The books you refer to are, but when were they published? When the best magazine on bonsai stopped printing, and went digital I stopped reading it.

Maybe, and I say maybe, using both is the way to go.
When I travel, I travel light and use a e-reader, When at home I grab a book from the shelf or do a search on the net.
If your bonsai book was any good 20 years ago, I'm sure it have still valuable information.

Exactly, I have a Kindle, and it was a waste of money, I never use it, I don't like trying to read from a screen, the pages don't fit. I seemed like a good idea at the time as they say. And you can't get an e book signed by the author as I have a few.
