Small sequoia redwood and coastal redwood help! was created by welshbonsai

Hello,

I am new to bonsai but having a wonderful time. I have several oaks, acer palmatum and 3 sequoia giganteum. The question I have is, the sequoia is a year or so old and is currently around 9inch or just over 22cm tall with a lot of green leaves and small branches. It is obviously a very young plant and the trunk is still tiny.
I intend to grow it on for a while to help thicken the trunk before I do anything to it. The image below is almost exactly like I the one I have now.

What I'm nervous about is: When I've decided on how tall I want my bonsai to be, when do I cut it to maintain that height? Do I do anything to the growth this early on to help establish a certain height or do I need to thicken the trunk for some years before I can cut the tree to the heigh that I want it to grow? At this early stage, I don't know when the first cut or shaping needs to be done - if any. If not, how long do I leave it grow before I can consider it suitable to work on and start to shape?

Thanks in advance to anyone who is willing to give me advice!

Can you add the pictures there missing.

How is the taper on the young metasequoia? From what i have seen from a few years in the ground, they create on there own a nice taper.

You don't cut a tree and then maintain its height. You cut it, then grow it again, then cut again, then grow etc..

This tree is not ready to be cut. You know it belongs outdoors? Just let it grow for now.

I did hope I can secure a strong window position for it to grow indoors but you're saying that won't be sufficient? Is this the same for my acer and oak trees?

Thanks for the advice, I have found a lot of resources online but I cannot find one that talks me through the time frames when dealing with a sapling.

Cheers,

What I just don't understand is, if you don't know how to grow a tree, how can you ever hope to be able to grow a bonsai?

Timeframe... 15 years to grow a pre-bonsai, if you know what you're doing.

What I don't understand is why you're a member of a forum like this and have nothing productive or positive to say. But thanks for letting me know what is on your mind.

If anyone has any positive advice to help me learn, I would appreciate it.

First thing to do is put them outside. Then lean how to look after them, water, fertiliser and let them grow. Buy a book and join a club is by far the best way to learn to grow trees, and then to progress to bonsai. But the first thing is you MUST put them outside. If you can plant them in the ground. You will be waiting for at least 4 to 5 years before you can do much to them.

Thanks for this. I was aware of the long term nature of this but I was just nervous about how to handle them very early on. I have now moved them all outside to a sunny spot.

Thanks for your help!!
