Juniper in winter was created by whit45

In May I was given a juniper bonsai as a gift. Amazingly, given that I have struggled to care for gold fish in the past, it has not only survived these past months but actually appears to be doing very well.

Per the overwhelming advice on this forum, I have kept it outdoors on my balcony thus far. But now it is the beginning of winter where I live, and I am uncertain as to what to do with the tree. So I guess my questions are: (1) is there a temperature at which it cannot survive outside and (2) if there is will it survive being kept inside for a few months during the worst of the winter? For reference, between December-February it will likely be 30-40 during the day and 20-30 at night where I live, with occasional nights in the 10-20 range.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Aha, you do live in a tropical country!
Here in Brazil temps are the same, 30-40 from December to March, and 20 to 10 in winter, from June to September.
They survive OK outside, no problems at all.

Maybe tropical, maybe not. Are those temperatures Fahrenheit or Celsius? The measurement system her on bonsaiempire is pretty much metric, but individuals may vary.

If those are Fahrenheit, the tree sitting on an outdoor balcony probably should be protected from wind on the colder nights. Get a large cardboard box and put the tree in it. Maybe put some crumpled up newspaper or something like that around to insulate the pot from sudden changes.

Na, 10F is only -12C. Junipers have no problems with that. Keep out of direct winterwinds but else..

I think, with absolutely no evidence, that what gets the trees is sudden change. All the trees out in the woods have their roots stuck in a pretty large heat sink and the temperature around the roots changes pretty slowly. Trees sitting in a small pot up on a plant stand can have icy wind blow around the top and bottom, dropping the temperature from way above freezing to way below in just a few minutes. I try to protect the dirt in the pot from fast freezes. It seems to work.

I would protect trees with styrofoam boxes instead of cardboard boxes.

Thanks all for the responses. I have clearly given myself away as an American by posting temperatures in Fahrenheit without even noting the measurement system--my apologies for the confusion. But converting the temperatures in your responses from C to F suggests that I should have no problem as long as I provide some wind protection. I'll work on that this weekend. Thanks again for the help.

If you lived in the upper midwest, or the great planes, or alaska, you might have to worry about your juniper in winter... depending on the type.
