Posted 5 years 2 months ago #538241. What kind of 名媛直播 do I have?
2. Does he look healthy?
3. Should I pull off the brown ends?
4. Should I replant him?
5. What should I do differently to make sure he’s healthy?
I bought him on a street corner, and got a general care sheet, but the sheet spoke of all sorts of 名媛直播’s and the woman couldn’t give me much info. I check him weekly to see if he is dry and if he is I water him until water runs out the bottom. Sometimes, (maybe monthly) I put his whole pot in a container of water to give him a long soak. I also bought him with fertilizer and I have used it once (the bottle says use once every six months) that is the little white balls you see on top of the soil in the photo. Ive also given him a “green green” liquid fertilizer three times. Weekly I take him outside for the day and put him on my back porch in direct sun. The rest of the days he sits on my night stand which does not get direct sun, but is a bright window.
I really love him. Any and all helpful information is welcome. Thank you for reading this and helping me

Posted 5 years 2 months ago #53825That kind of trees is called mallsai in here and it is considered fraud to sell Them Caling it bonsai. So lets talk about your tree instead.
Your tree is a juniper of some sort grown from cutting. Most of Them die within a few months after purshase. Porly rooted in bad draining soil beeing the most common reason. So congratulations for keeping your tree Alive for a whole year!. Good work.
If it was growing strong in the summer it is healthy. Strong junipers push 5-10 cm buds in the grow season.
Normally junipers is considered outdoor trees. If you dont live in extreme climate, dont Take it inside.
I do Believe that the tree would benefit from repotting. That is best done in late winter or early spring when the tree is just about to start growing after the dormancy period.
Only fertilize when the tree is growing.
Good luck growing.

Posted 5 years 2 months ago #53833Main problem here is that you keep the plant inside. Moving inside and outside is also not a good idea; Plants need time to adjust to new growing conditions. Moving them about makes it more stressfull for the plant.
I dare say your tree is also on the dry side. And counter intuitive: Do not put it in a bucket to soak.
What I would do:
Put it outside. Allow it to get natural watering from the sky. Only when it rains for days on end protect it a little. Do not pull the brown ends out; just leave it alone.
I do not see the need for repotting just yet.

Lb i totally respect your experience and I agree 100%
There are Nothing wrong in growing from cuttings and most of Them will survive if treated correct. But the survival rate of mallsai that is porly rooted cuttings put in pour soil and glued pebbels on. Transported in containers from cheapest possible producerar in darkness and sold long before established to beginners dont really have that big success rate.
OP seems to have managed to keep the tree Alive for one year with less than ideal care. That would tell me that this cutting was better rooted and strong than the average.

You just need to have the last word in EVERYTHING don't you.
If you agree with everything everyone is posting, why don;t you just agree. No need for extensive arguments why your original advice was right anyway.
Maybe, just maybe, it is wiser to only give advice once you have a better understanding of growing bonsai.

Posted 5 years 2 months ago #53846I dont have the need of having the last post. Believe me. You directed a comment to me implying, I think it is wrong to grow cuttings. Since this is totally wrong I want to make sure People dont think that. I have a lot of cuttings growing. Have been doing it for 13 years now, just not for bonsai.
If there is something terrible wrong with anything I write, I am happy for corrections. But this personal vendetta is really getting tiering and I would be really happy if that would stop.
