We went out of town one spring leaving my youngest son to water the trees. A week later I got an email, should I be watering the outside trees, too? Yes.

Got home to about half dead trees. One was a line tree bought as a souvenir at the beach fifteen years before. I watered it for a long time hoping, and finally gave up in June. All the bark was crinkled up, the scratch test found no green, it was dead.

I picked up the pot to pull the tree out, and saw a little spot of bright green at the base, and changed my mind. A month later it was a foot tall. Unfortunately it died a couple of years later or I would have glorious pictures now. You don't always know.

Since I’m not an expert at identifying dead trees, I wouldn’t give up on one unless it’s confirmed to be dead by a scratch test. Even then, as Ivan Mann said, some trees could be very resilient. Although some species of trees are much hardier than others...

Oh... no problem at all to not give up and to continue to care for it, but this one is really, absolutely, totally dead. It's passed on! This plant is no more! It has ceased to be! It's expired and gone to meet its maker! Its a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! If they hadn't wired it to the pot, it would be pushing up the daisies! Its metabolic processes are now history! Its off the twig! Its kicked the bucket, Its shuffled off 'its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-PLANT.
